Watching the many vessels, barges, speedboats, keteks, and sampans, passing to and fro on the water gleaming gold to reflect the lights from Ampera Bridge and surroundings, you can imagined the various eras that this river has seen. During the Sriwijaya Empire era, it was the base for the mighty armada of a maritime super power. Later, during the Palembang sultanate, it was heavy battles in which the Dutch warships pounded the Kuto Besak Fortress with their cannons.

Now, the Musi river plays a very important role, not only for those people who live along it but also for the province's economy. The Sriwijaya Fertilizer Plant, the Pertamina Oil Refinery, and many other businesses and industries along its banks are totally dependent to Musi River.
