Palembang, a historic city !!!

Palembang is a city that is rich in historical values. Its journey to become the city as we can see now does not take a short time. It’s so long way, full of sad, happy, and proud, touching and other breathtaking stories.

It’s already well known publicly that Palembang from 7th to 15th century was the center of Sriwijaya Empire. It was a powerful marine empire that its influences spread widely from China in Asia to Madagascar in Africa. This kingdom in its golden time was the center of education and a Buddhist study in Asia, a city where people came to improve their knowledge and horizon.

After Sriwijaya concurred by Majapahit Kingdom in 15th century (1477), Palembang finally experienced so many ups and downs, much colonized, much exploited, much hurt by other nations. It was occupied by the Netherlands in 1617, under British Empire’s colonization, intermittently from 1811 to 1814, and from 1818 to 1821.

It had not been over yet, in 1825 the Netherlands came again, and demolished the Palembang Sultanate, which was founded since the year 1500. Japan also did the same. This Sakura nation, which was so popular with its cruelty, had occupied Palembang in the World War II. What a city! Poor my ancestors!

Finally, in 1948, This land of Subharnadvipa (the island of gold) became the capital of South Sumatera province. At this time, did we feel the sweet of freedom atmosphere, but of course, still many things we had to struggle for. Much blood was shed by our forefathers to obtain this freedom. Blood that was certainly will not be fruitless! We are their next generation! We are the generation who will hold the ‘torch’ tightly! The ‘torch’, which keeps on being well taken care and passed to our next descendants. It is a vow!

In 1950, eventually, Palembang officially became a part of RI (Republic of Indonesia), a nation which is comprised of thousands islands, like pearls spread in the equatorial emerald!

Yes, history can not be ignored and forgotten easily. This city has once been a center of a great empire echoing worldwide. It is a great asset for us to become worth being visited by tourists from all over the world. This city is beautiful, clean and historic! People on earth should know this. Who knows the agenda of ‘visit Musi 2008’ will be a vital event for us to awaken the sleeping giant, the great Sriwijaya Empire. What do you say?
